Feature: Hand Therapy Clinics (#2)

For our second feature highlighting the OTs, PTs, Nurses, and Clinics already doing "the work," we travel up the East coast to New York, New York, and highlight The Hand and Upper Extremity Therapy Center.

While researching we discovered that every doctor, nurse, and therapist residing at HSS, the hospital that houses the Hand Therapy Clinic, is focused on treating patients with musculoskeletal conditions, including some of the worlds most renowned athletes (NBA Basketball Players, the Brooklyn Nets). So it makes sense that "The Hand and Upper Extremity Therapy Center" houses an award-winning staff, that provides upper extremity (hand, wrist, and elbow) rehabilitation services designed to insure optimal restoration of function. With a staff that includes occupational and physical therapists that have specialized training and clinical expertise in hand therapy, the Hand Therapy Clinic is among the best in the country at treating upper extremity ailments and injuries. Every therapist (Occupational and/or Physical) will devise individualized evaluations and treatment programs for a wide range of acute, post surgical and chronic conditions involving the  hand, wrist and elbow. The Hand Therapy Center offers a full range of surgical and non-surgical treatments, focused always on what's best for the patient.

What is hand therapy?

According to The Hand Therapy Clinic, Hand therapy is the rehabilitation of the hand and upper extremity, with the primary objective being to restore optimal function. A hand therapist is an occupational or physical therapist who specializes in the hand, wrist, arm, and shoulder rehabilitation."The therapists at the HSS Hand and Upper Extremity Therapy Center focus on evaluation and treatment of the hand, wrist, and elbow and have specialized training in hand therapy," making them an authority in this field.

Should I see an occupational therapist or a physical therapist?

Both occupational and physical therapists may specialize in hand therapy. They are equally qualified to assist in the rehabilitation of the hand and/or upper extremity. With absolutely no difference in the treatment you'd receive from an occupational or physical therapist at the HSS Hand and Upper Extremity Therapy Center, a lot of the time it ends up coming down to what the patients insurance will cover...
